My mother saves many items that I deem questionable i.e…my grade school artwork, old tennis rackets, and towels that have seen better days. But every now and then her “It’s still good!” mentality pays off. And by pays off, I mean some crazy cool items end up in my closet! Over the years, my mom Phyllis has acquired an impressive wardrobe. My favorite leather boots? Her “Barefoot Originals” in soft brown leather from the 80’s. My vintage glass bead and white satin clutch? Yep, hers in college. The silver and wood choker that I love? Well, you get the idea.
This week’s launch of the Target + Marimekko collaboration has me thinking about the amazing items which have found their way from mom’s house to mine. We all remember the Lily Pulitzer + Target fiasco from a year ago. That collection, which was supposed to be in store for a few weeks, instead made it a few hours. This time around, the retailer giant claims it has wised up. “We don’t intend for these items to sell out in a day,” said a Target spokesperson. (We shall see, as early as opening day there were several pieces from the collection popping up on ebay.)
I for one, am excited to see the Finnish designer’s distinctive patterns and bright colors ready for a new generation of fashionistas. Marimekko has been popular since it’s debut, but really took off after Jackie Kennedy purchased six of the iconic dresses in 1960 to wear on the campaign trail. Suddenly those bold, simplistic prints were everywhere, even the Midwest, where a fabulous Marimekko dress was purchased by my mom in the late 70’s. “I thought it was so fun! The pattern and colors really caught my eye,” mom says. “It could be that marrying someone who only wears Brooks Brothers made me long for a little drama in my wardrobe!” This dress went to parties, violin concerts, even an afternoon tea. And honestly, this investment piece has not aged at all. The pattern is just as bright, the seams perfect! Thanks mom for the new contribution to my collection- now can we talk about your vintage Cartier tank watch…..?
